Accessing Staff DEC email using an Apple iPhone/iPad
The following information is provided to allow you to configure your Apple iPhone with DEC email service. Steps for configuring your Apple iPhone for other services are not provided within this document.
This document assumes that you have read the manual and understand the basic functions of the Apple iPhone. A copy of the Apple iPhone manual is available at www.apple.com
Please note that no support is available for accessing NSW DEC email via an Apple iPhone. Please do not contact
NSW DEC ICT Service Desk or Regional IT Services Units regarding this option. This documentation is provided as is for information purposes only.
Creating Email Account
- From iPhone’s Home screen, tap Settings.
- Scroll up and tap “Mail, Contacts, Calendars”
- Tap “Add Account….”
- Tap an account type: Microsoft Exchange
- Enter your email address in the “Email” field
- Leave the “Domain” field empty
- Enter your username in the “Username” field. This will be your portal username in the form of firstname.lastname@det
- Enter your portal password
- Click Next
- If you receive a message “Unable to Verify Certificate”, accept this message. Wait until the “Server” field appears.
- When the Exchange settings appear enter webmail.det.nsw.edu.au in the “Server” field
- Click Next (If the information was entered correctly you will see “Account Verified” at the top of the screen and then the Exchange options will appear.We recommend that you turn on synchronise for Mail and Calendar entries only.)
- Click Done to complete the setup.
Apple iPhone Push and Fetch settings
The default Push and Fetch settings in the Apple iPhone will increase your battery usage once mail is being synchronised to the phone. In order to reduce the battery usage it is recommended that the following settings be applied.
- From iPhone’s Home screen, tap Settings.
- Tap “Fetch New Data”
- Set Push to OFF
- Set Fetch to Hourly
- Click on Home button to save settings
Important Note
Your NSW DEC Portal password requires changing every 60 days. This means that when you change your portal password you will also need to update the password field within the Apple iPhone to the new password.
If this is not completed you will no longer receive mail to the phone and will be prompted for the new password.
